Before an exam, it helps to know what score you actually need. The maths is simple once you know how much the final counts for. Here is the method.

The formula

Final needed = (target grade − current grade × (1 − w)) ÷ w.

Step by step

  1. Write your current grade as a percentage.
  2. Write the final’s weight as a decimal: 30% is 0.30.
  3. Multiply your current grade by (1 − weight).
  4. Subtract that from your target.
  5. Divide by the weight.

Worked example

You have 85%, the final is worth 30% and you want 80% overall. 85 × 0.7 = 59.5. Then (80 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 68.3%. You need about 68% on the final.

Frequently asked questions

What if I need more than 100%?

Then the target is not reachable with the final alone. Ask about extra credit or pick a lower target.

Does the weight equal the points?

Not always. Use the percentage of the total grade.

Can I use this for coursework?

Yes. Treat any remaining assessment as the “final” with its weight.
