How it works
Mean is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are. Median is the middle number when they are in order (or the average of the two middle numbers). Mode is the number that appears most often. Range is the largest number minus the smallest.
Example
For 12, 15, 18, 15, 20, 9 the sum is 89 and the mean is 14.83. In order the numbers are 9, 12, 15, 15, 18, 20, so the median is 15, the mode is 15 and the range is 11.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean uses every value, so a very large or small number can pull it. The median is the middle value and is less affected by extremes.
Can I use negative numbers or decimals?
Yes. Use a minus sign and a decimal point.
What if there is more than one mode?
