How it works
The calculator converts both times to minutes since midnight and subtracts. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it adds 24 hours, so a shift from 22:00 to 06:00 counts as 8 hours. The break is then subtracted. Decimal hours are the total minutes divided by 60, which is what you need to multiply by an hourly rate.
Example
09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours, or 8.00 in decimal hours.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work across midnight?
Yes. If the end is earlier than the start, it assumes the next day.
Why decimal hours?
Pay and invoices are usually worked out from decimal hours, for example 7 h 30 min is 7.50.
