Weather reports, recipes and science use different temperature scales. Here is how to convert between Celsius and Fahrenheit, plus a quick trick for doing it in your head.

The formula

Fahrenheit = Celsius × 9 ÷ 5 + 32. Celsius = (Fahrenheit − 32) × 5 ÷ 9.

Step by step

  1. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9 and divide by 5 (or multiply by 1.8).
  2. Add 32.
  3. To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 first.
  4. Then multiply by 5 and divide by 9.

Worked example

20 °C × 1.8 = 36, plus 32 = 68 °F. Going back: 68 − 32 = 36, × 5 ÷ 9 = 20 °C.

Common mistakes

  • Adding 32 before multiplying when converting to Fahrenheit
  • Forgetting to subtract 32 first when converting to Celsius
