How it works
A word is any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Characters are counted with and without spaces. Sentences are counted from full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Paragraphs are non-empty lines. Reading time assumes about 238 words a minute and speaking time about 130 words a minute, which are typical averages.
Example
The sentence “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” has 9 words, 44 characters and 1 sentence, and takes about 2 seconds to read.
