How it works
Adding tax: tax = price × rate; total = price + tax.
Removing tax: price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate); tax = total − price before tax.
The default rate of 20% is only an example. Tax rates differ by country, by region and by type of goods or services, and they change. Use the rate that applies to you.
Worked example
To add 20% tax to 100: tax is 20 and the total is 120. To take 20% out of a 120 total: the price before tax is 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 and the tax is 20.
Tips
- Do not mix up removing 20% from a total (divide by 1.2) with taking 20% off (multiply by 0.8). They give different answers.
- Show the tax on your invoices as a separate line. Our invoice generator has a tax field.
- Ask your tax authority or an accountant whether you need to charge tax at all.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for VAT, GST and sales tax?
Yes. All three work the same way for this calculation. Just enter the correct rate.
Which rate should I use?
The one that applies to you and to what you sell. This tool does not look up rates.
Why divide by 1.2 to remove 20%?
Because the total is 120% of the original price, so the original is the total divided by 1.2.
