How it works
The area of the floor or wall is divided by the area of one tile to find the number of whole tiles, then the waste allowance is added and the total is rounded up. In feet, tiles = area in sq ft × 144 ÷ (tile length in × tile width in). In metric, tiles = area in m² × 10,000 ÷ (tile length cm × tile width cm). Grout lines are not included, so leave a small extra margin.
Example
A 12 ft by 10 ft floor is 120 sq ft. With 12-inch tiles and 10% waste you need 132 tiles.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra should I order?
About 10 percent is common for straight layouts, and 15 percent or more for diagonal patterns or small rooms with many cuts.
Do I include grout lines?
This calculator does not. Wide grout joints reduce the number of tiles slightly.
What if my room is not a rectangle?
Split it into rectangles, calculate each, and add the results.
