How it works
Roman numerals use the letters I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). Letters are added from largest to smallest, except that a smaller letter before a larger one is subtracted, as in IV (4) and IX (9). Standard numerals cover 1 to 3,999.

2026 is MMXXVI: MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6).

How do I write 4 in Roman numerals?
IV, which is 5 minus 1.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No. The system had no zero.
Why does it stop at 3999?
Standard Roman numerals use at most three of the same letter in a row, so MMMCMXCIX (3999) is the largest.
