How it works
The whole part is split into groups of three digits (thousands, millions, billions and trillions). Each group is written as hundreds, tens and ones and followed by its scale word. Decimals are read digit by digit after the word “point”. Hyphens join tens and ones, as in twenty-one.
Example
1234.56 is “one thousand two hundred thirty-four point five six”.
Frequently asked questions
Does it use “and”?
No. It uses the American style without “and”, for example one hundred twenty-three.
How do I write a cheque amount?
Write the whole part in words and the pence or cents as a fraction. Check your bank’s format.
How large a number can it convert?
Up to 15 digits before the decimal point.
