Intuit discontinued QuickBooks Self-Employed and replaced it with QuickBooks Solopreneur, a simpler plan aimed at freelancers and sole proprietors who do not need full double-entry accounting. QuickBooks Online remains the more powerful product, built for businesses that have grown past a single person tracking income and expenses.

Why QuickBooks Self-Employed went away

Intuit discontinued the standalone Self-Employed app and mobile product, shifting focus to QuickBooks Solopreneur as the entry-level option and QuickBooks Online as the more complete accounting product. If you were already on Self-Employed, Intuit has been prompting migration to one of these two replacements rather than continuing that older product.

What Solopreneur is actually built for

Solopreneur targets a single-person business: tracking income and expenses, separating personal from business spending, estimating quarterly taxes, and basic invoicing. It does not support double-entry bookkeeping, multiple team members, inventory tracking or the deeper financial statements (like a proper balance sheet) that a growing business eventually needs.

What QuickBooks Online adds

Online is full double-entry accounting software: proper balance sheets and profit-and-loss statements, multiple user access with permissions, inventory tracking, bill management, and considerably deeper reporting. It costs more than Solopreneur but is the product most accountants and bookkeepers expect to work with if you ever bring one on.
