Work out the sale price after a discount, how much you save, or what percentage off a sale price really is. Enter the original price and either the discount percentage or the final price.
| Discount as a percentage | – |
| Sale price | – |
How it works
Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Savings = original price − sale price. Discount % = savings ÷ original price × 100.
Worked example
An 80 item with 25% off costs 80 × 0.75 = 60, so you save 20.
Tips
- Two successive discounts do not add up. 20% off followed by another 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%.
- If you give discounts on your services, check your margin first with the profit margin calculator.
- Discount before tax, then add tax. Use the VAT calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage off?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the price.
How do I find the discount from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100.
Should freelancers offer discounts?
Sparingly. Reducing scope is often better than reducing your rate. See our guide on pricing freelance projects.
