How it works

Commission = sales amount × commission rate. Sales needed = commission goal ÷ commission rate. This calculator uses a single flat rate. Tiered or capped plans need each tier worked out separately.

Worked example

20,000 of sales at a 10% rate earns 2,000. To earn 3,000 you would need to sell 3,000 ÷ 0.10 = 30,000.

Tips

  • Check whether your rate applies to revenue or to profit, and whether refunds reduce it.
  • Ask when commission is paid, since it is often later than the sale.
  • If you earn commission as a self-employed person, remember to set aside money for tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate commission?

Multiply the sales amount by the commission rate as a decimal. For 10%, multiply by 0.10.

What is a tiered commission?

A plan where the rate changes as sales pass certain levels. Work out each tier separately and add them up.

Is commission before or after tax?

Usually before. Tax is worked out separately.
