How it works
To add or subtract, the fractions are put over a common denominator: a/b + c/d = (ad + cb) ÷ bd. To multiply, multiply the tops and the bottoms. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. The result is then divided by the greatest common divisor to give the simplest form.
Example
1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6, which is 0.8333 as a decimal.
