How it works

Net monthly cash spent = monthly costs − monthly income. Runway (months) = cash available ÷ net monthly cash spent. If your income is equal to or above your costs, your cash is not running down and the runway has no limit.

The estimate assumes your costs and income stay the same. Real life changes, so check it regularly.

Worked example

You have 12,000, your costs are 3,000 a month and you earn 1,000. You spend a net 2,000 a month, so you have 6 months of runway.

Tips

  • Many freelancers aim for three to six months of costs as a safety cushion. Choose a level that suits your risk.
  • Use only income you can rely on, not hoped-for projects.
  • Invoice promptly and follow up late payments. See how to follow up on an unpaid invoice.
